چکیده
We evaluate the cohesive energies E b of four systems in which particles move on a cylindrical surface, at fixed distance R from the axis. We find quite nonuniversal dependences of E b on R. For the Coulomb binding problem, E b is a monotonically decreasing function of R. For three problems involving Lennard-Jones interactions, the behavior is nonmonotonic; E b is larger at R = ∞ than at R=0; the maximum binding corresponds to R ∼ 0.7 σ (the hard core parameter). Consequences of the enhanced binding are discussed. The discovery of carbon nanotubes has stimulated a rapid evolution of ideas, experiments and understanding concerning states of matter confined to the proximity of a cylindrical surface[1, 2, 3]. Examples of such systems include electrons present within a nanotube and atoms or molecules moving just outside or within such tubes. This paper reports unexpected behavior we have found in studies of four such systems: a +/− pair of charges bound by 1

Barrabès-Israel null shell formalism is used to study the gravitational collapse of a thin cylindrical null shell in vacuum. In general the lightlike matter shell whose history coincides with a null hypersurface is characterized by a surface energy density. In addition, a gravitational impulsive wave is present on this null hypersurface whose generators admit both the shear and expansion. In ...

We explore several supersymmetric alternatives to explain predictions for the cosmic ray positron excess. Light sneutrino or neutralino LSP’s, and a fine-tuned model designed to provide a δ-function input, can give adequate statistical descriptions of the reported HEAT data if non-thermal production of the relic cold dark matter density dominates and/or if “boost factors”(that could originate i...
متن کاملFe b 20 02 Patterns in hydraulic ripples with binary granular mixtures
An experimental study of a binary granular mixture submitted to a transient shear flow in a cylindrical container is reported. The formation of ripples with a spiral shape is observed. The appearance of phase segregation in those spiral patterns is shown. The relative grain size bewteen sand species is found to be a relevant parameter leading to phase segregation. However, the relative repose a...
